Music is the universal language of mankind.

UNITED BY SOUND

Creative Direction, Illustration, Print Design

UNITED BY SOUND is a postage stamp series exploring how immigrant and diasporic musical traditions shaped American sound. Through illustration and storytelling, the project highlights how cultural exchange transformed music into a shared language across generations.

THE CHALLENGE

Designing for a one-inch stamp format required careful consideration of scale, clarity, and hierarchy. Each composition needed to communicate cultural identity, form, and visual detail while maintaining legible at a small size.

This pushed me to simplify forms while still capturing the complexity and essence of each instrument. Through sketching and iteration, I explored how much detail could be retained without overwhelming the composition, refining each design to balance recognition, readability, and cohesion across the series.

THE CONCEPT

Music has long been a force of connection across cultures, transcending language and bringing people together through rhythm, sound, and memory. It allows people to carry their identities across borders through both migration and displacement, grounded in resilience and continuity.

UNITED BY SOUND celebrates this idea through four string instruments: the Portuguese ukulele, Scottish fiddle, Senegalese banjo, and Italian cello, highlighting their influence on American music. Together, they reflect how American culture is built from many roots, layered into a sound that continues to evolve.

  • The Italian Cello

Originating in Italy, the cello became a cornerstone of Western classical music before shaping American orchestras and contemporary genres. Its depth and warmth brought emotional richness to everything from classical compositions to film and experimental music.

  • The Senegalese Banjo

The banjo traces its origins to West African instruments like the akonting, brought to the Americas through the transatlantic slave trade. Reclaimed over time, its distinct sound became foundational in shaping American folk, blues, and early country music.

  • The Scottish Fiddle

Rooted in Scottish and Irish traditions, the fiddle was carried to the United States through early European settlers. Its expressive, fast-paced style became central to American folk, bluegrass, and country music, shaping the storytelling traditions within these genres.

  • The Portuguese Ukulele

Originating from Portuguese immigrants in Hawai‘i, the ukulele evolved from the braguinha and quickly became a defining instrument in island music. Its bright, rhythmic tone later influenced American folk and pop, contributing to a more playful and accessible sound.
